Patterns of light
A figure between surface and shadow
Floral shapes cross the figure and continue into the surrounding darkness. Pattern becomes a second set of lines across the portrait.
The idea in the image
The image brings together the body’s continuous contours and the smaller, broken shapes of a floral pattern. These two structures compete gently for attention. We can read the figure as a whole, then move closer to follow individual marks across an arm or the torso.
Light and composition
The side-on stance keeps the silhouette clear, while the hand near the hip adds a small change of direction. Black and white makes the pattern part of the same tonal language as the skin and background. Some marks appear sharply defined and others soften as they move across the form. The changing visibility of those details creates depth within a restrained composition.
The result
The portrait becomes a study of surface as well as shape. The floral rhythm interrupts the outline without erasing it, making the eye alternate between a person and an arrangement of light and dark.
