A second frame
A mirror portrait built around a returned gaze
The mirror gives the face a frame of its own. A softer shoulder and hand in the foreground make the reflection feel close but separate.
The idea in the image
This portrait explores how a reflection changes the route between subject and viewer. We see the face through an object within the scene, while fragments of the nearer figure remind us of the space outside it. The mirror becomes both a boundary and a way in.
Light and composition
The wooden edge provides a firm vertical beside the reflected face. Warm hair, skin and wood share a restrained colour range, giving the image continuity. In the foreground, softer shapes overlap the mirror’s lower and right edges. The difference in sharpness gives the reflection priority without removing the physical presence of the person in front of it.
The result
The image feels intimate through its layered viewpoint. The face remains easy to find, but the viewer must look through the surrounding shapes to reach it. A familiar object gives the portrait depth and a subtle sense of observation.
